Frequently asked questions

The IQ Gym is an educational IQ training platform covering 40 question families across five cognitive domains. It reports every score as a confidence band rather than a single number, and it improves test performance rather than underlying intelligence.

Can you really train for a higher IQ score?

You can reliably improve your IQ test score, and The IQ Gym is built to do that. Practice raises familiarity, pattern recognition, strategy, and speed on the question types tests use. What it does not do is permanently raise underlying general intelligence — the evidence for that kind of far transfer is weak, and The IQ Gym does not claim it.

How accurate is an online IQ test?

An unproctored online estimate is less precise than a professionally administered test, which is why The IQ Gym never reports a single number. Every result is a 90% confidence band — typically about ±7–8 points on the quick test and ±5 on the full mock — alongside a percentile and a per-domain breakdown.

How long is the free test?

The free quick test is 18 questions with a 12-minute timer, covering abstract, numerical, verbal, and spatial reasoning. It needs no account, and you get your band, percentile, per-domain breakdown, and a full worked explanation for every question at the end.

How does The IQ Gym calculate an IQ score?

The IQ Gym uses an Elo-as-Rasch (1PL) calibration: every question carries a difficulty rating and every response updates your ability estimate. Ability is then estimated with an EAP method against a normal prior, converted to the familiar 100 ± 15 scale, and reported as a band rather than a point.

Is an IQ Gym score accepted by Mensa or other high-IQ societies?

No. High-IQ societies do not accept unsupervised online scores, including The IQ Gym's. The IQ Gym is an educational training and self-assessment tool, not a qualifying instrument, and its results should not be used for admissions, employment, clinical, or educational-placement decisions.

How many questions does The IQ Gym have?

The bank holds thousands of original questions spanning 40 question families across five cognitive domains: abstract reasoning, numerical reasoning, verbal and logic, spatial reasoning, and memory and speed. Questions are added continuously, and adaptive selection means repeat tests draw fresh items.

Are the questions copied from IQ books or real tests?

No. Every question is original. Questions are either generated procedurally and then checked by an independent verifier that re-derives the answer and rejects anything ambiguous, or hand-authored and checked against established item-writing standards. Published tests and puzzle books informed the question formats only, never the content.

Will I see the same questions if I retake a test?

No. The IQ Gym tracks every question you have seen and excludes it from future assessments, and the adaptive engine selects fresh items matched to your current ability. This keeps a retest meaningful rather than a memory exercise.

Does The IQ Gym work on a phone?

Yes. The IQ Gym is built mobile-first and every question type — including the figural, spatial, and diagram-based ones — is designed to be readable and answerable on a small screen without pinching or horizontal scrolling.
