How to solve dice view puzzles

Dice views: faces seen together are never opposite

Two faces visible in the same view cannot be opposite each other. Collect adjacencies across the views and the opposite pairs fall out by elimination.

Updated

You're shown a die from one or more corners and asked: which symbol lies opposite a face, what sits on a hidden face, what shows after turning or rolling the die, or which view cannot belong with the others. One fact powers everything: a view shows faces meeting at a corner, so any two faces visible together are adjacent — never opposites. Every view is a list of banned pairings.

Harvest the adjacency list

From each view, record the visible pairs: seeing 1, 2, 3 together bans 1–2, 1–3, 2–3 as opposite pairs. Two views usually ban enough pairs that some face has only one partner left. That's your lever.

Eliminate to the forced partner

Ask of the target face: which numbers has it been seen with? Those are out. Of the remainder, which are already claimed by a forced pair? A face banned from four of its five candidates has its opposite decided. Chain: each solved pair shrinks everyone else's candidates.

Never assume the 1–6, 2–5, 3–4 die

Real dice sum opposite faces to 7. Test dice needn't — items are built to punish the assumption. Derive every pair from the views alone; if the views happen to confirm the standard die, fine, but let them say so.

Hidden faces, turns, and rolls

The picture is drawn from above-front-right: the lower-left visible face is the FRONT, the lower-right is the RIGHT side. A 'hidden face' question (the bottom, back, or left of one named view) is the opposite-pair question in disguise: a hidden face is the opposite of the visible face it faces away from, so solve the pairs, then read that view. 'Turn the die so X is on top and Y faces you — what is on the right?' goes further: two dice can share all three opposite pairs yet be mirror arrangements, so here the way faces sit AROUND a corner decides the answer — work from a view showing two of the named faces. For rolls, move one quarter-turn per arrow, updating top and front each time.

The strategy

  1. List each view's visible trio and the pairs it bans.
  2. Start from the face in the question: strike every number it was seen with.
  3. Use already-forced pairs to strike further candidates.
  4. State the surviving partner — and check it was never visible beside the target.

Common traps

  • Importing the 7-sum rule uninvited.
  • Merging views of what might be two different dice — check the stem's wording.
  • Forgetting that a face can appear in several views; every appearance adds bans.
  • Treating opposite pairs as the whole story: on turn-to-face questions the mirror-arranged die gives a different answer — and that answer is among the options.
  • Rolling questions: skipping ahead instead of updating the die one quarter-turn at a time.

Speed · ~55s/item: Adjacency harvest plus elimination runs in 40–70 seconds. Guessing from a mental 3-D model is slower and much less reliable.

Worked example

Made by the same generator and answer checker as the practice questions, at middling difficulty, but never served in a test. Commit to an option before you reveal — the pick is yours alone and is never recorded.

All the views show the same die. Which symbol is on the hidden BACK face of the numbered view — the face pointing away from you?

✚▲■1★▲●2●▲✚3

The question asks about view 3 (highlighted).

Reveal the answer

The answer is A — ◆.

Show why — the worked reasoning
The three faces you cannot see are the opposites of the three you can: bottom is opposite top, back is opposite front, left is opposite right. So the back face of view 3 is whatever is opposite its front, the ▲. Symbols that share a view are adjacent, so none of them can be opposite the ▲ — strike each one out, using the symbols the views share to turn one view onto the other in your head. That pins the whole die: the opposite pairs are ✚|★, ◆|▲, ■|●, so the answer is ◆.

Try it yourself: 4 practice questions

Pick an answer, then reveal it. Nothing is recorded, there is no clock, and none of these questions is ever used in a test.

Question 1 · Easy

All the views show the same die. Turn it so the first symbol is on top and the second faces you. Which symbol is then on the RIGHT?

★✚■●▲★✚▲◆

Turn the die so ▲ is on top and ★ faces you.

Reveal the answer

The answer is B — ●.

Show why — the worked reasoning
Turning a die never changes which faces touch, so first rebuild it from the views: the opposite pairs are ★|◆, ●|✚, ■|▲. With ▲ on top and ★ facing you, the bottom must be ■ and the back ◆ — that leaves ● and ✚ for the right and left faces. Adjacency cannot separate those two; the CORNER ORDER can. Every view of one die runs top → front → right the same way round, and reading the views that way puts ● on the right. Take the corner backwards and you get ✚ — that is the mirror die, not this one.
Question 2 · Easy

All the views show the same die. Turn it so the first symbol is on top and the second faces you. Which symbol is then on the RIGHT?

Question 3 · Easy

All the views show the same die. Which symbol is on the hidden BOTTOM face of the numbered view — the face it is resting on?
