How to solve odd-word-out questions
Odd word out: property scans
Find the property four words share and one lacks — scanning meaning, function, then structure, in that order.
Updated
Word classification is the verbal twin of figure odd-one-out and obeys the same law: the answer's property must cover exactly four of five. 'Which feels different' fails on well-made items because every word feels a little different.
Scan order: meaning → function → structure
First semantic categories (four fruits and a vegetable; four internal organs and the skin). Then functional properties (four things that produce light and one that reflects it; four ways of receiving and one of giving). Only if meaning gives no 4-vs-1 split, inspect the words themselves: palindromes, repeated letters, alphabetical order, hidden words.
Beware the surface category
The best items place all five in one obvious group — all sea creatures — so the lazy category covers five, not four. The real split is one level deeper: shark (fish) vs whale, dolphin, seal, walrus (mammals). When the obvious category covers everything, dig one property deeper.
The strategy
- Name the obvious shared category. If it covers all five, it's scenery, not the rule.
- Propose a deeper property and COUNT: it must include exactly four.
- Verify the four all genuinely share it — don't hand-wave the ones you didn't examine.
- Two candidate odd words means a mis-chosen property; the correct property isolates exactly one.
Common traps
- Choosing the rarest or fanciest word — obscurity is not the property.
- Properties that split 3–2 (near-misses that feel decisive).
- Forgetting structural checks on lists whose meanings are suspiciously uniform.
Speed · ~30s/item: 20–40 seconds. Counting is the discipline that prevents the expensive second-guessing loop.
